Our week of all-star speaker announcements continues! We are so pleased to announce that Michel Martin, Emmy-winning journalist and host of NPR’s Morning Edition, will be joining our American Youth Justice Narratives: Perspectives of the Media, Policymakers, and Communities panel at our upcoming 2026 Janet Reno Forum on September 10th!
Martin’s work speaks for itself! We are so excited that she will bring her wealth of expertise in deep reporting, storytelling, truth-telling, and empathy to the Forum. Her talents truly cross all media, from newspaper and print journalism, to television, radio, and podcasting! We’re eager to hear her insight on media, narrative, and how stories are told in and about youth justice today.
About Michel Martin
Emmy-winning journalist and host of NPR’s Morning Edition.
Previously, she was the weekend host of All Things Considered and host of the Consider This Saturday podcast. Martin currently serves as a contributor for PBS’s Amanpour & Company. Martin has been honored by numerous organizations, including the Candace Award for Communications from The National Coalition of 100 Black Women. In 2019, Martin was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for outstanding achievement in journalism.
About the Panel
“America Youth Justice Narratives: Perspectives of the Media, Policy-makers, and Communities” will explore the stories we, collectively, are telling about today’s youth justice system. What are the most prominent narratives being told about the youth legal system today, by the media, policy-makers, and communities themselves, and what are some ways we can help shift those narratives for positive impact? How can we use storytelling and truth-telling to transform lives, help heal harm and trauma, and make a better future for all?
Michael Umpierre will facilitate a panel that includes:

- Ramon Ramos, Founder and President of The Exception
- Liz Ryan, Stanley S. Nelson Distinguished Practitioner for Justice Reporting & Communications at Louisiana State University and former OJJDP Administrator
- Vincent Schiraldi, Visiting Fellow of the Pinkerton Foundation and former Maryland Secretary of Juvenile Services
About America’s Youth Justice Story Forum
“America’s Youth Justice Story: Unearthing the Past and Reimagining the Next Chapter” will be an in-person, one-day conference held in the heart of Washington, DC on Georgetown University’s Capitol Hill Campus on September 10th. The Forum will explore the past, present, and future of America’s Youth Justice story through the lens of truth-telling and creative expression. en artists up in the rooftop Capitol View Convening Space.
