We are so grateful for Jenny Abamu‘s impactful work exploring the individual and collective scope of what we are uncovering not only in Maryland, but across the country. Please check out this TikTok from Jenny that so movingly encapsulates that the Forgotten Children Initiative is not just about researching the past.

The past is with us. The living family members featured in her story are beginning the hard work of memorialization, and the policy work of William C. Smith, Jr. and others reminds us that there are children in our youth legal system today just like Charles Salisbury, who died from neglect after losing his shoes in the Maryland snow while in state custody.

The families want their stories told. For decades, the children buried here were lost and forgotten. I visited the gravesites of over 230 Black boys buried in Prince George’s County outside what was the House of Reformation and Instruction for Colored Children. Researchers have found over 1000 similar graves across the country. Now, families who have been found are making it clear that they don’t want their loved ones forgotten again. #maryland #children #pgcounty #blackchildren #history @Jenny Abamu Maryland Reporter
